About the Work
"When a woman’s death became the climax of so much of the ballet repertoire, what did ballet become for us?"
In ballet works created in the 18th century, scenes of women dying appear with striking frequency. Often placed at the dramatic climax of the work, these death scenes have come to serve as a kind of rite of passage through which a principal ballerina’s dramatic ability is tested. Women in ballet are often portrayed as innocent figures who believe in unwavering love, only to become victims of male selfishness and betrayal. Their deaths, however, rarely mark an ending in themselves. Instead, they return as figures of fantasy, becoming a passage through which their love with a man can finally be fulfilled. Asking the recurring question, “Why must she die?”, the work examines romantic love, tragic death, and the gaze that surrounds them.
